The way forward for South Africa is the Way of the Master.”

– Chief Albert Luthuli – (Nobel Laureate, September 1962. Quote from “The Passing Summer” by Michael Cassidy, p 86. Hodder & Stoughton, 1989)

Albert Luthuli

Albert Luthuli was a deeply committed Christian. He was also a Zulu chief and leader of the African National Congress and the people of South Africa in their resistance against racial prejudice and the injustice of Apartheid. Imprisoned for resisting the regime, he was later restrained under several banning orders before returning to his home in Groutville, Zululand.

The Biblical worldview that informed Chief Luthuli’s determined stand against oppression was the fruit of the Christian heritage he received from his forebears who were taught by the missionaries that laid the foundation of religious instruction, literacy and education of the Zulu people of Natal.

Daniel Lindley

The Reverend Daniel Lindley and his colleagues, Aldin Grout, George Champion and Newton Adams were the first of the American Christians who gave their lives to serve the people of South Africa in this manner during the 1800’s.

Daniel Lindley’s work among the Afrikaner Boers and the Zulus was profoundly important at that time. Yet little is known of this story and the significance of his contribution to South Africa.

Albert Luthuli, Zulu Chief, Educator and Administrator President of the ANC, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate 1960 –“for non-violent resistance to apartheid”.

Daniel Lindley, American missionary to the Zulus, dominee of the Boer farmers and Land Commissioner of the British Government in Natal (1835 to 1873)

Chief Albert Luthuli’s life and prophetic words, and the life and work of Daniel Lindley offer both direction and hope for the future of South Africa. Both men were grounded in a Biblical view of the world and conducted their lives accordingly.  Recovery and understanding of their worldview and its application in our times is an imperative that may not be ignored.

To this end, the LINDLEY LEGACY FOUNDATION exists to showcase and celebrate the unfailing grace and faithfulness of God in having raised men of such noble character to serve His purposes among our people in their time of need and to uncover the lost Paths that they trod in pursuit of a better way to build and nurture our nation
